Originally part of the Cherokee Outlet, the Ames, Oklahoma area attracted white settlers in the fall of 1893 when the land was opened for settlement. Initially known as Hoyle, for a nearby creek, the town was renamed for Henry S. Ames, a railroad official, in 1902. Ames is in Major County, Oklahoma.
