Situated in northeastern Seminole County, Oklahoma, Cromwell was platted in 1923, and its post office was established in 1924. Quickly earning a reputation as a lawless town, lawman William Tilghman was asked to come out of retirement at the age of seventy to establish law and order, where he was killed that same year. The town hosts the annual Bill Tilghman Celebration on the second Saturday in October.
