Gene Autry is a small town in Carter County, Oklahoma. The town was originally named Lou, when its first post office was established in 1883. Later that same year, it was renamed Dresden. In 1887, its name was changed to Berwyn. Finally, in 1941, the town's name was changed to Gene Autry for the motion picture star, Gene Autry, whose family had moved to the town while he was an infant, and who had bought a 1,200 acre ranch there in 1939.
