Situated in western Sequoyah County, Gore is less than a mile from the Muskogee County line and across the Arkansas River from Webbers Falls. Western Cherokee Chief John Jolly established his home in the vicinity in 1829, and the Cherokee capital, Tahlonteskee, was nearby. The town was known as Campbell when its first post office was established in 1888. Later it became known as Illinois Station until 1909, when it was renamed for Oklahoma Senator Thomas Gore.
