Hardesty is in Texas County, Oklahoma. Its original site was northeast of the town's current location, in the area that is now Optima Lake. Its post office was established in 1887, named for A.J. Hardesty, who was a primary property owner. The town died when the railroad laid its tracks twenty miles west in 1901, creating the town that later became Guymon. However, in 1929, a second rail line was laid just a few miles away from Hardesty, and the new community was designated the name of Hardesty.
