Located in Cleveland County, the Lexington, Oklahoma post office was designated in 1890, although a trading post, known as Camp Holmes, was in operation just north of the townsite since 1835. Saloons dominated the town's businesses until Oklahoma became a state in 1907, at which time intoxicating liquor was prohibited.
