When the area was opened to non-Indian settlement in 1892, Cordell, Oklahoma was founded by H.D. Young, who opened a general store about a mile and a half northest of New Cordell, and a post office was established there the same year, named for Wayne W. Cordell, a longtime postal service employee. In 1897, the store and post office was moved to the current town site, known as New CordellI, which was made the seat of Washita County in 1906, after a legal fight that began in 1897.
