Newkirk is in Kay County, Oklahoma. Although it is one of the smallest communities in the county, by population, Newkirk is the county seat. The town was platted in 1893 as the seat of K County, and was originally named Lamoureaux. Its name was changed to Santa Fe, but neither the railroad or the post office would accept that name, so it was renamed Newkirk, derived from Kirk, which was a shipping depot two miles north of the town.
