Pryor Creek is the seat of Mayes County, Oklahoma. The area was settled before 1820 by Captain Nathaniel Pryor, a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, who established a trading post on Grand River. In 1870, a post office was established under the name of Coo-y-yah, Indian Territory, which was changed to Pryor Creek in 1887. Although the post office dropped the "Creek" from the town's name in 1909, the official name of the city remains Pryor Creek.
