Situated in east-central LeFlore County, Oklahoma, Rock Island was established about 1904, when the Midland Valley Railway came through the area. The town was platted by James L. Hale, who named the town for the coal town by that name in Illinois. Just northeast of Rock Island is the Jenson Tunnel, the only railroad tunnel in Oklahoma.
