Skiatook, Oklahoma is in both Tulsa and Osage counties. The town was founded by William C. Rogers, chief of the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory, who established a trading post on the south bank of Bird Creek, two miles north of the current townsite. When its post office was established, it was known as Ski-a-took, which is a Cherokee word that refers to something of large size. The hyphens were removed from the town's name in 1892, and Skiatook was incorporated in 1905.
