Situated in northeastern Mayes County, Spavinaw, Oklahoma was originally in the Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. Lewis Rogers, son of Captain John Rogers, came to Spavinaw Creek in 1829, building a mill, distillery and salt works there. Early names for the community included Lynch's Mill, Lynch's Prairie, and Spavina Mills. The town was incorporated in 1930.
