Located in northwestern Haskell County, Stigler, Oklahoma is the county seat. Founded in 1889 by Joseph Stigler, a former U.S, Deputy Marshall, the town was originally named Newman, for a doctor who had moved to the village, but the post office changed its name to Stigler to avoid confusion with Norman, which was also in the Oklahoma Territory. The town was incorporated in 1905 and was named the county seat when Oklahoma became a state in 1907.
