Stilwell, the seat of Adair County, was established when the railroad came through in 1896, and incorporated the following year. Stillwell was named for Arthur Stilwell, owner of the railroad that routed its tracks through the area. When Oklahoma became a state in 1907, the Goingsnake and Flint districts of the Cherokee Nation were combined to form Adair County, and Stilwell was named the county seat in 1910.
