The town of Stonewall, Oklahoma began as a trading post in Pontotoc County, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, and was established on the south side of Clear Boggy River shortly before the end of the Civil War by Robert Cochran, brother of William Cochran, who served as the first mayor of Stonewall. Stonewall was named for Confederate General Thoman "Stonewall" Jackson. Stonewall is a small town located southeast of Ada and northwest of Coalgate.
