Named for the mineral springs in the area, Sulphur, Oklahoma is the seat of Murray County. The first residence in the area was built by Noah Leal, the son-in-law of former Chickasaw Governor Cyrus Harris, in 1878, and the settlement began when conventions and other events were held at the springs. A post office was established there in 1895. Early in the community's history, there was Est Sulphur and East Sulphur, on opposite banks of Rock Creek, with no bridge connecting them.
