Wanette is in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma. Joe and Katy Melot established one of the first homes in the area in 1868 and, in 1876, the Potawatomi gave some of their reservation lands to the Benedictine Order of the Roman Catholic Church, which started a mission nearby. The town that developed went through several name changed before settling on Wanette when its first post office was established in 1894. Outlaws Belle Starr and Cole Younger frequented the area during its territorial days.
