Weatherford is located on State Highway 54, one mile north of Interstate 40, in southeastern Custer County, Oklahoma. The town was incorporated in 1898, a few years after the area was made available for homesteading through the Cheyenne-Arapaho Opening of 1892. Southwestern Oklahoma State University is in Weatherford, and Route 66 ran down Weatherford's Main Street, with some stretches of the historic highway remaining.
