Woodward is the seat of Woodward County, Oklahoma. Established in the western part of the Cherokee Outlet, the town began six years before the land was officially opened to settlement, as it was needed as a provisioning point for Fort Supply, which was twelve miles to the northwest. Due to a surveying error, the town's land office and other public buildings were located west of the developing town, which resulted in the creation of two towns, which eventually became one.
