Inhabited in the early 1840s, the community was initially known as Hoggum, because of the large number of pigs that were raised there. When the first post office was established, the town was named Aumusville, for Amos Davis, the deceased son-in-law of Henry Turner, one of the town's founds. Being German, Amos was generally called Aumus. Later, its name was shortened to Aumsville. The city is located in Marion County, Oregon.
