Cornelius is in Washington County, Oregon. The city is named for Colonel Thomas R. Cornelius, who built a home, warehouse and a store there in 1871, alongside the tracks of the new railroad. The community was incorporated as Cornelius in 1893. Prior to that time it had been known as Free Orchards.
