Named for Detroit, Michigan, due to the large number of people from Michigan in the community, Detroit is a city in Marion County, Oregon. Established sometime in the late 1800s, the community's original townsite was flooded in the summer of 1952 upon completion of the Detroit Dam on the Santiam River, so the town relocated about a half mile northwest, and was incorporated as a city that same year.
