The second largest city in Oregon, Eugene is the seat of Lane County and home to the University of Oregon. The city is named for its founder, Eugene Franklin Skinner, who built the first cabin in the area, a trading post which later became the community's first post office. At the time, the settlement was known as Skinner's Mudhole.
