Established by gold miners in 1862, the community was initially known as Independence, and was about a mile and a half northwest of its current location. When its post office was established in 1878, its name was changed to Granite. When gold mining was made illegal in 1942, the city's economy crashed. By 1960, the city had a population of two. As of the 2000 census, its population had risen to twenty-four.
