Originally known as Silver Lake and Lake City, the Wallowa County city was renamed Joseph in 1880, in honor of Nez Pierce Chief Joseph. The city was platted in 1883, and incorporated in 1887. At varying times in its history, the city's economy has been based on agriculture and lumber; however, in 1982 a new industry was born when three bronze foundries opened in the area. Joseph sponsors the annual Chief Joseph Days Rodeo in July, Bronze, Blues & Brews in August, and the Alpenfest in September.
