Located at the edge of the Grande Ronde Valley, between the Wallowa Mountains and the Blue Mountains, La Grande is near the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, in Union County, for which it serves as the County seat. Originally named Brownsville, the city had to change its name due to that name already being in use by a city in Linn County.
