Mt. Angel was settled in 1850 by Benjamin Cleaver, who planned a townsite to be named Roy. In 1881, a railway station was established and named Fillmore, and the following year a post office with the name of Roy was established, but neither name lasted. A contingent of Benedictine monks came from Switzerland in 1881, building an abbey named the Mount Angel Abbey. When the city was incorporated in 1893, it took the name of the abbey. The City of Mt. Angel is in Marion County, Oregon.
