Named for the first merchant located in the community's present location, Barney Prine, Prineville is the seat of Crook County, Oregon. Its first post office was established with the name of Prine in 1871, but changed to Prineville in 1872. The city was officially founded in 1877 and incorporated in 1880. Bypassed by the railroad in 1911, Prineville residents built their own railway connecting the town to the main line nineteen miles away.
