Established on an estuary of the Umpqua River in 1852, Reedsport was named for an early settler, Alfred W. Reed, who founded the city in 1912. Built on marshy ground, with a history of flooding, many of the city's early buildings were elevated above the ground. After a devastating flood in 1964, a dike was constructed to protect the lower town. Reedsport is in Douglas County, Oregon.
