Roseburg is the seat of Douglas County, Oregon. Named for Aaron Rose, who settled in the area that was to become Roseburg in 1851, operating the region's first roadside inn out of his house. The community was first known as Deer Creek, as it is located at the confluence of Deer Creek and the South Umpqua River. When the city became the county seat in 1854, Rose donated land and money to build the courthouse, prompting the renaming of the town to Roseburgh in 1857, which was later shortened.
