The seat of Columbia County, Oregon, the City of St. Helens was established in the 1840s as a Columbia River port. Incorporated as a city in 1889, the community was founded by Captain H.M. Knighton, a native of New England. Initially the town was known as Plymouth, but was changed to St. Helens in 1850, for its view of Mount St. Helens in Washington. The city is on Oregon's border with Washington.
