The community of Sisters, Oregon grew up about three miles southwest of Camp Polk, a military post that was established in 1865 in response to the Paiute Indian wars. When the military camp was closed about a year later, its post office was moved to the current site of Sisters, and changed to that name, in honor of the Three Sisters Mountains that dominate its western skyline. Located in Deschutes County, Oregon, Sisters was incorporated as a city in 1946.
