Located in Lane County, in the Southern Williamette Valley of Oregon, Springfield is separated from Eugene to the west by Interstate 5. The community's first settlers are thought to be the Briggs family, who came in 1848. Incorporated as a city in 1885, Springfield was named for a natural spring located in a field or prairie within the city's boundaries. The author, Ken Kesey, was a native of Springfield, Oregon.
