The Sweet Home Valley of the South Santiam River was settled in 1851 and by 1865, the Santiam Wagon Road led through there to Camp Polk in Central Oregon. The first named community in the Valley was Buckhead, on Ames Creek. The settlement of Mossville sprung up not far from there and, by the 1880s, the two communities had expanded toward one another, and the combined communities were incorporated as Sweet Home in 1893. Foster became part of Sweet Home in the 1980s.
