Incorporated in 1857, The Dalles is Wasco County, Oregon's largest city and county seat. The name comes from the French word "dalles" which means "flagstones" in reference to the columnar basalt rocks carved by the now inundated rapids of the Columbia River. In the same area was the Petite Dalles, or Little Dalles, which is also now inundated.
