Situated along the south side of the Columbia River, and named for the Umatilla River, which enters the Columbia River on the side of the city, Umatilla is in Umatilla County, Oregon. Its first post office was established in 1851 and the current town was surveyed in 1863, incorporated as Umatilla Landing in 1864.
