Situated in Montgomery County, Gladwyne is neither an incorporated area or a census-designated place. The community was settled in 1682 by Welsh Quakers, and given the name of Merion Square. In 1891, it was renamed in order to imitate the stylish Welsh names of neighboring towns, although the name is meaningless in Welsh.
