Established in 1680 and incorporated in 1746, the Town of Bristol is the seat of Bristol County, Rhode Island. The deepwater seaport is named for Bristol, England. The first battle of King Philip's War took place in the area that is now Bristol in 1675. Following the conclusion of the war, the town was settled in 1680, as part of the Plymouth Colony, and was named the shire town of Bristol County when the county was created in 1685.
