Established in 1639 and incorporated in 1784, the City of Newport, Rhode Island is located on Aquidneck Island in Newport County, and serves as the county seat. Prior to the Revolutionary War, Newport was the capital of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, with Benedict Arnold serving as its first governor. The town remained the capital until Rhode Island became a state, at which time the capital was moved to Providence.
