Settled in 1710 by emigrants from the town with the same name in Massachusetts, Scituate is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island. Scituate was part of Providence until 1731, when it was incorporated as a separate town. Stephen Hopkins, the moderator of Scituate's first town meeting, later became governor of Rhode Island, and was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. A prominent feature of the town is the Scituate Reservoir, which spans a large portion of the town.
