Smithfield, Rhode Island, in Providence County, was settled in the 1600s. The farming community was named in honor of a miller named John Smith, to whom Roger Williams granted the land upon which the town now sits. Home to a very active Quaker community, Smithfield is the site of a colonial ghost town, Hanton City. Smithfield was part of Providence until 1731. The villages of Esmond, Georgiaville, Greenville, Mountaindale and Stillwater are part of Smithfield.
