Barnwell is located in southwestern South Carolina, about thirty-five miles southeast of Aiken. People began to settle the area by 1800, but it was not incorporated as a town until 1829. Prior to incorporation, the settlement was known as Red Hill. Barnwell is now the seat of Barnwell County.
