Located on Port Royal Island, at the site where Jean Ribault and his fellow Huguenots established Charlesfort in 1562, Beaufort is the seat of Beaufort County, South Carolina. It is the second oldest city in the state, behind Charleston, and is known for its military establishments and historic character.
