Camden is the seat of Kershaw County and South Carolina's oldest inland city, being part of a township plan ordered by King George II in 1730. Originally named Fredericksburg Township, and later Pine Tree Hill, the town was named Camden in 1768, in honor of Lord Camden, a champion of colonial rights. The Battle of Camden, fought on August 16, 1780, was the worst American battle defeat of the Revolutionary War.
