Charleston, South Carolina's second largest city, is located near the middle of the state's coast at the point where the Ashley and Cooper rivers meet at the Atlantic Ocean. Originally called Charles Town, in honor of King Charles II of England, Charleston is the seat of Charleston County. Due to its many churches, the city is sometimes referred to as the Holy City.
