Chesterfield is the seat of Chesterfield County, South Carolina. The first settlers, mostly Welsh, came to the area of Chesterfield in the 1700s and Chesterfield was already an industrial hub by the mid 1800s. Near the end of the Civil War, General Sherman came through Chesterfield, burning its courthouse and many other buildings.
