Graniteville was the site of the first large-scale cotton mill in the South, built in 1846. Graniteville is an unincorporated community in Aiken County, South Carolina. The settlement straddles Horse Creek, which originates in the nearby town of Vaucluse. Most of the town's buildings are constructed of blue granite from local quarries, for which its name is derived.
