Located in the northeastern part of Williamsburg County, Hemingway was known as Lamberts until the turn of the 20th century. In the early 1900s, Dr. W.C. Hemingway sold a portion of his land to Seaboard Air Line Railroad, which built a depot there. When the town incorporated, it took his name. Every April, Hemingway hosts the Bar-B-Q Shag Festival.
