Hilton Head, a resort town on Hilton Head Island, is situated in Beaufort County, South Carolina. It was an important base of operations for the Union blockade of Confederate ports in the Civil War, and was where hundreds of ex-slaves migrated there after it fell to the Union Army, and are today known as the Gullah or Geechee. Hilton Head is a mecca for golfers, hence its resort status.
