Kingstree is the seat of Williamsburg County, in the eastern part of South Carolina. The Black River flows through the western side of the town. When the town was laid out in colonial times, it was named Williamsburg. An unusually large white pine tree was found along the river, which was claimed by the king for possible use as a mast for ships. While the county retained the name Williamsburg, its seat became known as The Kings Tree, which was eventually shortened to Kingstree.
